A Forced Shift, A Fortunate Discovery: From Hasselblad to Fujifilm GFX

A Forced Shift, A Fortunate Discovery: From Hasselblad to Fujifilm GFX

Just two months ago, I faced a photographer’s worst nightmare: my Hasselblad X2D was stolen. It was a devastating blow, especially given my long-standing appreciation for its capabilities. For many photographers, the X2D is the pinnacle of the craft. Its unrivaled Hasselblad color science, incredible sharpness, and overall technical perfection are, without a doubt, best-in-class.

However, even before the theft, I was grappling with a peculiar feeling. Paradoxically, it was this very perfection that had begun to bore me. I’d come to realize that ultimate technical quality, while impressive, can ultimately lack charisma and soul. I craved something more in my images than just flawless execution.

The Allure of Fujifilm: A New Direction in Photography
The universe, it seems, had other plans for my photographic journey. The theft of my Hasselblad forced my hand, and after careful consideration, I chose to dive into the Fujifilm GFX medium-format system. This might seem counterintuitive to many, given the Hasselblad’s reputation, but a recent and profound photographic awakening heavily influenced my decision.

A few months prior, I had acquired a Fujifilm X100VI, and I fell in love. Fujifilm, in my opinion, is truly leading the charge in the photo industry right now, but not by chasing the same metrics as everyone else. While other companies are locked in a relentless race for the best autofocus, Fujifilm is innovating in a far more artistic space: film simulations.

This focus on in-camera creativity is a game-changer. The X100VI offers endless possibilities to manipulate the look of your JPG output directly in the camera, allowing for a vast range of aesthetic expressions. And if you ever find yourself not loving a particular look, you always have the safety net of a neutral RAW file to fall back on. It’s the best of both worlds: creative freedom with uncompromising flexibility.

Embracing the Fujifilm GFX Medium Format
My love affair with the X100VI was so profound that when it came time to replace my stolen Hasselblad, the choice was clear: the Fujifilm GFX medium format camera. It boasts the same exceptional optical standards as my previous Hasselblad, but with a distinctly different “look” to its images – one that resonates deeply with my current desire for more character in my photos. So far, I’m loving it.

This unexpected shift from Hasselblad to Fujifilm has truly been a journey from the technically perfect to the expressively profound. It’s a powerful reminder that sometimes, the most interesting photographs aren’t just about what’s flawlessly rendered, but what truly speaks to your vision and evokes emotion.

The accompanying picture, taken in Kivik with the Reala Vivid film simulation, is a 200% crop that beautifully illustrates the unique aesthetic I’m now exploring with my GFX.
